At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
